A month-long live art experience in November brings Kuwait’s cherished memories to life through filography
Kuwait, 29 October 2026: Waldorf Astoria Kuwait welcomes acclaimed Kuwaiti artist and entrepreneur Maisam Qassem for the concluding chapter of its Contemporary Visual Arts Exhibition. Throughout November, the hotel’s main lobby will become a live canvas for “Threads of Heritage”, an artwork inspired by the historic 1968 Kuwaiti quarter-dinar banknote depicting young girls playing the traditional game of Al Haila.
Known for her intricate filography, Maisam works with precisely arranged nails, woven threads, fine wood, and natural leather to transform familiar scenes into contemporary artworks. Following her 2023 live piece inspired by the Kuwaiti quarter-dinar, her latest creation draws on the precision of traditional crafts, including string art.
Commenting on the collaboration, Saleh Bataineh, General Manager of Waldorf Astoria Kuwait, said: “This collaboration celebrates Kuwait’s heritage through Maisam’s distinctive artistry. We are delighted to give our guests the opportunity to see her work takes shape and connect with the stories that inspired it”.
Throughout November, guests and visitors can watch Maisam at work in the main lobby, observing the delicate layering of threads as her piece takes shape. The experience will begin even before arrival, with an exclusive gesture conceived by the artist, known as Haba, whose details will remain a surprise for guests.
Extending this artistic journey into the hotel’s culinary offering, Threads Afternoon Tea at Peacock Alley takes inspiration from Maisam’s “Threads of Heritage”. The experience features delicate savory bites and handcrafted sweets alongside freshly baked scones, artisanal jams, and traditional Arabic coffee, culminating in a refreshing tableside sorbet. Together, these elements offer a thoughtful tribute to treasured memories and intricate craftsmanship.
Since beginning her artistic journey in 2018, Maisam has earned widespread recognition for her string and nail art. Her notable achievements include creating exclusive gifts for VIP guests during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, producing bespoke artworks for prominent regional leaders, and completing what is described as the world's largest string and nail artwork in 2022.[HBA1] [HA2]
Beyond the centerpiece, the collection will showcase additional artworks inspired by the GCC’s rich cultural heritage, incorporating elements of traditional Sadu weaving and Arabic calligraphy. Through her signature nail-and-thread technique, Maisam brings a contemporary interpretation to the region’s shared traditions and craftsmanship.
The collaboration brings art into the guest experience in unexpected ways, from witnessing Maisam’s creative process to discovering an afternoon tea inspired by her work, offering a distinctive finale to the hotel’s exhibition.
